Salt Lake City offers a diverse range of resorts (makes sense if you have 11 to choose from) from classy Deer Vally, which has won SKI Magazines "Resort of the Year" award 5 times in a row, to the local "ski bum" haven of Alta. Four of the resorts (Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, and Brighton) are located in the Cottonwood Canyons, three are located in Park City, and the other three are located further North towards Ogden (Snowbasin, Powder Moutain, and Wolf Mountain)

Snow[]

Known as "The Greatest Snow on Earth", the snow in Utah is commonly referred to as "perfect". It's light and dry because of the salt content which it picks up from the Great Salt Lake. This means it's not too tiring to ski in and you can get face shots all day long. Utah receives an average of 500in per year. This SkiUtah website has more information about what makes Utah's snow and resorts so great.

Backcountry Skiing in Utah[]

Just as popular as the several ski resorts in the SLC vicinity, is the backcountry haven of the wasatch. Between Millcreek, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood canyons is a plethora of backcountry options accessed by skinning from the trailheads or even through gates at the ski areas. While the list is far too long to list all the options a tourer has to choose from, this map provides the names of nearly everything skiable within the area. Also, before one heads out, they should always check here , to access the Utah Avalanche Center daily report that SLC locals are so lucky to have. The avalanche report is very detailed offering updates of the day-to-day conditions. The Utah avalanche center provides an in depth explanation of the snows stability, it also provides various information regarding what to look out for. They are constantly uploading photos and explanations of all the recent major avalanches. We are lucky to have such a great program helping people stay safe. If you ever find your self in trouble call the UCSSAR and they will come to the rescue.
